Workshop with Sculptor Weaver Sue Hiley Harris 3 & 4 March

Sculptor Weaver Sue Hiley Harris will visit Vancouver & Salt Spring February 26 to March 4 2012. Sue lives and works in Wales and exhibits her work internationally as well as across Great Britain. In 2007 she was invited to represent Wales at the 2e Biennale Intetnationale du Lin de Portneuf in Quebec.

An article "The Bare Bones of the Bags" about Sue's recent work appeared in the Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers 239, Autumn 2011 pp 16 - 19.

In Vancouver Sue will be showing some of her work at Urbanity, www.urbanity.ca and will be giving a lecture 'Ancestor Bags' and a two day workshop on making string bags

The Lecture - Sue Hiley Harris: Ancestor Bags

Australian-born sculptor weaver Sue Hiley Harris will talk about the ideas and inspiration behind her recent project, Ancestor Bags, as well as how she arrived at this point in her artistic development. Ancestor Bags is an installation of thirty suspended abstract works, each representing one of her direct British and Australian ancestors over four generations.

Sue lives in Britain and was inspired after seeing an Aboriginal string bag in Oxford's Pitt Rivers Museum with an old label indicating that it had been used 'for carrying the bones of dead relatives.' It was similar to one sent to her by her mother. The details of the weaving, dyeing and construction of each work - as well as the materials used - convey coded information about members of her family. Shown together, the hangings are a unique visual exploration of ancestry.

The lecture will take place on Sunday, February 26th at 7.30pm at the Kanata Co-op Community Building, 7155 Blake Street in Champlain Heights (close to Boundary and 49th Avenue). Please see the MAP. Please register for the lecture by sending an email to julia.manitius@gmail.com

The Workshop -- String and String Bags (two day workshop)

For many years Sue's mother sent her Australian Aboriginal string bags. Sue used these in her daily life and for storage bags in her studio. Sue has studied her own string bags and researched others in museum collections. This workshop is an opportunity to explore the remarkable materials and structure of Indigenous Australian string bags and make both knotted and looped string bags using the same techniques and easily available materials. No experinece is needed.

The 2 Day workshop will be held on February 27 & 28th from 10am - 4pm each day, at the Kanata Co-op Community Building, 7155 Blake Street in Champlain Heights (close to Boundary and 49th Avenue). Please see the MAP

The cost of the workshop is $150. A $50 deposit is required to secure a place. The $100 balance will be accepted in cash at the beginning of the workshop. A receipt will be issued by Sue.

Netting needle (available for use or purchase at the workshop)
Mesh stick (a ruler approx 1" wide will be fine and there will be some at the workshop to use)

We are currently accepting applications for the Salt Spring Island Craft Bazaar being held Friday March 30th AND 31st 2012 in the beautiful Mahon Hall on Salt Spring Island, BC.

Set up will be Friday 10am, doors open to the public from 12-6pm. Saturday doors open at 10am-4pm and take down from 4-6pm.

Booth space is $100 for 8’ x 5’ you can rent a 8’ table for $10 and there are lots of chairs. (Limited half spaces are available or table sharing is allowed as long as we’ve approached each product being sold)
We are dedicated to the enablement of our local arts industry. We are looking for emerging, unconventional, and fresh talents from the Gulf Islands, Vancouver Island, and the Lower Mainland.

ALL items sold MUST be HANDMADE.

Rendezvous, the French Patisserie located just opposite Moby’s off Upper Ganges Road is a charming, cozy little spot to enjoy the most delectable desserts.
Available are yummy treats ranging from fruit tarts to crepes, cakes to parisian macarons, quiches and of course, Brigitte’s famous, and delicious, Caneles de Bordeaux. Together with brewed coffee using organic fair trade Ometepe coffee. You can buy locally roasted Mt. Maxwell and Omapete beans. Rendevous is a lovely place for a morning break or tea with the girls in the afternoons.

Brigitte Gonzalez, the chef and owner, started selling her pastries at the Saturday market in Ganges in 2005. Because of the popularity of her tempting edibles with both tourists and locals she started her French Patisserie in 2008. With reasonable prices ranging from $1.50-$5.00, Birthday Cake from $25, Rendezvous is worth a visit, or three. And this Christmas, it won first prize in Driftwood’s most creative window display.

It is tucked away from the road, so may be difficult to spot. But if you make your way to the Moby’s carpark in front of Harbour's House Hotel, it’s hard to miss.

Beginner Spinning/Dyeing Workshop | Starts on 5 November

Come and try your hand at spinning with artisan, Rachel Ogis, who has had a 22 year love affair with spinning, knitting and weaving.

In the four hours on Saturday you will start a dye pot and learn to sprinkle dye white roving or white fleece. Then while it is working we will all start spinning some roving. Learning to treadle, spin and keep your yarn moving will take the rest of the workshop.

The following Saturday, we will have our dyed rovings ready to spin, and you can play with colour combining on the drum carder. Your spinning practice will continue and you can be proud of your first bobbin of handdyed, handspun yarn. Choose either natural or chemical dyes. All supplies and use of spinning wheels included.

Join us for an inspirational workshop of play and fun with wool and sheer fabric collaging. In Mosaic and Nuno Collage we will work with inspiring fabric fragments and lots of colored wool. We will cut, assemble and stitch together shapes of dyed, painted or printed silks and other gauzy fabrics like tulle and lace as a base for wonderful works of felted art to wear.

Ulrieke Benner – Art You Wear makes a substantial investment when planning a class and vacancies can be hard to fill even if there is a waiting list. If you cancel any time up to 30 days before the beginning of a class, you will receive your $100 deposit only if we can fill your space. If not we keep the deposit. If cancellation is received less than 30 days prior to the session, the balance less the deposit will be refunded only if we can fill your spot.

This is a mentoring group starting on September 13, for creative and healing artists who want support to develop their business.
If you or someone you know would benefit from the support of a group dedicated to learning and practicing the skills of creative and compassionate entrepreneurship, read on!!

Whether you already know what your business is or are needing the guidance to figure it out, in this 8 week workshop, "Heartrepreneurs" will help you to develop your ideas with the support from a small group. 　

As the facilitator of the group, my focus will be on helping you to identify and create a business that is authentic and meaningful to you, and that considers your unique creative, emotional and spiritual needs, something which is often lacking in business/ entrepreneurship training. My commitment is also to support you to sustain a loving relationship with yourself (and others) as you explore how to bring your gifts into the "marketplace".
The course starts on September 13 and runs for 8 weeks, on Tuesdays from 10-12 at my studio on Butterstone Farm. The course costs $250 before September 5, and $300 after.

The program will be facilitated using the practice of Loving Inquiry, which will help us to focus not only on the WHAT of turning our passion into an income, but on the HOW of navigating the "sometimes times scary and unpredictable" journey of business development with presence, creativity and compassion.

Heartrepreneurs will also draw on the wisdom of local and international creative artists, educators, spiritual teachers and business people for inspiration and guidance.

Alchemy: A power or process of changing one thing into another; esp., a seemingly miraculous power or process of changing a thing into something better.

This workshop explores the creative process of transforming any photograph into something beyond the original capture, bringing it closer to your vision.

We will discuss ways to identify, and visually emphasize, your original inspiration for a photograph, as well as reveal possibilities for using the original image as a launching point for your imagination.

Through a slideshow of before and after examples, lecture, discussion, questions, answers and samples, you will become aware of an inspiring and infinite world of possibilities for your images.

Emphasis will be placed on the use of Photoshop techniques, hand-embellishment, and alternative printing surfaces.

This inspiring day is about planting seeds of creativity. We will not be attempting to create finished products.

Participants should come prepared with several images* to be used in discussion, and a notebook. A laptop computer is optional.

Dry pastels lend themselves particularly well to images printed on some of the beautiful textured fine art papers available to photographers today.

It’s like magic watching the sense of light and depth develop in your photographs while you work with them by hand.
Building on the integrity of the original, underlying photograph, each image takes on a new dimension that is very personal and unique.

During the course of this workshop, we will all work side by side hand painting throughout the day. I will do several demonstrations on various types of subject matter and sizes of prints, in an effort to show you techniques I’ve learned over the years. Some of the topics of the day are: Adding texture and content, using pastels as a ‘depth of field’ tool, repairing problems with the prints, image embellishment vs transformation, safety, storage, presentation and shipping finished prints.

Storytelling is ubiquitous, around the earth and throughout history. As Ursula K. LeGuin said, “There have been great societies that did not use the wheel, but there have been no societies that did not tell stories.” Whether it is real-life experiences or wild imaginings that inspires the material, each of us has stories to tell. This is an opportunity to investigate the various methods and intentions of storytelling in a group atmosphere, while cultivating one’s own personal storytelling style. Learn how to use stories to share different perspectives, delve into the many ways to enter a story and develop a manageable sequence of events.

For Naomi Steinberg, connecting with four year olds is as marvellous and unique an experience as connecting with 84 year olds – both are possible through storytelling. In classrooms, rainforests, festivals and conferences, Naomi has over 13 years experience facilitating creative workshops with diverse communities. Nadine Wright is helping today’s actors move their craft to the next level. Through her ACT2 workshop series, she works with artists to discover their true voice, connect movement to impulse and be present without apology.

Based largely on the Method, this workshop employs relaxation, sensory, and other exercises in a safe, supportive environment. With the emphasis on process, actors are encouraged to push their creative boundaries. The workshop is designed for professional actors or artists seeking to reconnect to their craft and is limited to ten participants. Scenes will be pre-assigned and participants must be off-book prior to the workshop.

Nadine began her artistic career as a ballet dancer performing worldwide with the renowned company Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. As an actor, she has trained extensively in New York, Los Angeles and Vancouver and holds over 40 professional credits in TV, film and theatre. Some of her recent credits include leading roles in the theatrical productions of Gift of Screws, The 21st Floor, In the Eyes of God The Mercy Seat and TV productions Fairly Legal, Harper’s Island, Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica, and the lead role in the award winning film Good People Bad Things. She also directed the multidisciplinary production of The Dharma According to Fifi.

As an acting coach, Nadine merges her vast professional experience, dedication to
craft and extensive training to inspire and guide today’s artists.

New Theatre Arts program offered at the Centre School!

The Salt Spring Centre School is excited to announce that starting in September, they will be offering a Theatre Arts program as part of the curriculum for their students. The school currently has vibrant music and visual arts programs, as well as the whole school play: a full-year theatre arts program will build on these areas and boost the school’s arts offering.

Theatre arts will include specialties such as drama, improv, theatre games and dance. Other elements may be incorporated such as set design, mask-making, clowning, script-writing….there are many possibilities.

Art programs at the Centre School are led by professional artists from the community and the same will be true for Theatre Arts: the school has contacted a number of prospective instructors and has received keen interest from Robbyn Scott, Sue Newman, Naomi Jason, and Kate Maurice from Stagecoach. Adina Hildebrandt, a parent at the school, the director for the whole school play and co-director of Stagecoach, has been enthusiastic about the launch of the Theatre Arts program: “Through theatre, children learn not only to be expressive in the world but to see themselves to be expressive and creative. It is a wonderful gift and I am so excited that the Centre School is offering this to its students.”

Thanks to the generosity of artists and donors for our annual Art Lottery fundraiser, the cost of this program is fully covered so there will be no additional expense to families.

The Centre School is an independent school here in the island offering programs from Kindergarten to Grade 6. For the 2011/ 12 year, spaces are available in some classes.

ArtCraft Season 2011 runs from Friday 17th June to Sunday 18th September. 10am -5pm. Mahon Hall in Ganges. It opened with the colourful, packed and soical gala on Friday night.

A summer-long show and retail outlet, ArtCraft opens daily from Friday 17th June to Sunday 18th September. 10am -5pm. It includes featured showcase exhibits of visual art and fine crafts on the Mahon Hall stage.

These juried Showcase Gallery exhibits change on a bi-monthly basis and include a special opening night. They are often group shows highlighting works by members of a variety of Salt Spring Island Guilds—Painters, Potters, Woodworkers, Basket Makers, Glass Artists, Jewellers, Fabric Artists, Weavers & Spinners.

The opening showcase exhibition this year is Mrs Drysdale’s Family Circus. Their first time on Salt Spring Island with atonishing new and startling sculptures. Created by Paul Burke and Anna Gustafson, these sculptures are at once, charming and thought-provoking. A definite must-see on your visit to Salt Spring. The circus exhibition runs from 17 June - 6th July.

Michael Lahay and wife Clare Cullen talked for a long time about opening an eco- retail shop when they were living in Vancouver. There, the conditions never quite came together to make it happen. Then they moved to Salt Spring. Somehow, it felt eminently doable here, it made sense and seemed to fit the green-living vibe of the island.

So, two and a half years ago, they set up Gecko Green Living.

Located at the heart of Ganges, Salt Spring Island's eco-retail store carries everything you need for an eco-friendly home, office and lifestyle. They have bulk natural cleaners, solar chargers, waste-free lunch supplies, eco-friendly homeware and bamboo, hemp, and organic clothing and accessories.

Gecko also supports local artisans that have a recycled, reusable or reclaimed component in their product.

Owl + DotDot has contemporary and fuss-free hats for adults and kids. They will soon be carrying the new “Ara” Dolls (Prices are around $49.95).

RumahKampung has their line of recycled jacket bags & jute(burlap) bags with upcycled upholstery fabric ($59). They have smaller things also, like iPod/smartphone cozies, PenPods for a place to keep pens, pencils and other implements accessibly close to your book (starting from ($12). All are made from remnant fabrics.

Dancing bears has a wide range of happy, colourful wrist warmers recycled from sweaters($13-$20)

Greeting cards by local artist Kristen Rae Finley. Printed on recycled paper using plant based inks of course. Large cards are $6 each or two for $10 and the smaller cards, coming in soon, are $5 each.

Gecko offers free exhibition space for local artists, potters and weavers too. Works rotate every four to six weeks. And one of the first to grace the fresh green walls of the shop, is the bold yet tranquil mixed media art by Carole Leslie from Zendotstudio. Original art start from $95 and prints go for $20 each.

And in the near future, Gecko is planning to organize a series of ‘re-skilling’ workshops. Working together with a wide variety of talented local crafts, trades and qualified people, they will offer informal training in various practical skills that can help save money and energy.

With the aim of improving person and local resiliency, the many workshops planned, cover :

The Salt Spring Studio Tour has been around for two decades and is a self-guided tour of working artisan studios throughout the island. ACT 2 Workshop : Acting Intensive with Nadine Wright

Based largely on the Method, and drawing from her diverse professional experience, Nadine Wright applies a personalized approach to coaching professional actors and helping them prepare for TV, film, and theatre auditions.

This Salt Spring Island workshop is designed especially for islanders with either professional or community theatre experience, and will be limited to ten participants. Scenes and partners will be pre-assigned and participants must be off-book prior to the workshop.

Nadine began her artistic career as ballet dancer performing worldwide with the renowned company Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. As an actor, she has trained extensively in New York, Los Angeles and Vancouver and holds over 40 professional credits in TV, film and theatre. Some of her recent credits include leading roles in the theatrical productions of Gift of Screws, The 21st Floor, In the Eyes of God, and The Mercy Seat, TV productions Fairly Legal, Supernatural, Harper’s Island, Battlestar Galactica, and the lead role in the award winning film Good People Bad Things. She also directed the multidisciplinary production of The Dharma According to Fifi. As a coach, Nadine merges her vast professional experience, dedication to craft and extensive training to inspire and guide today’s artists.

Knotty Threads Studio and Local Artisans Gallery was started in 2009 by weaver Jane MacKenzie when she moved to the south end of the island and was looking for a studio space with a little more natural light. In a fortuitous stroke of luck that seems to happen quite frequently on Salt Spring, Jane was given a massage as a gift at a charming spa just as the spa owner was moving to another location. This gave Jane the opportunity to start her own studio at that scenic location which has now grown to become the Knotty Threads Studio and Local Artisan Gallery.

The Artisans Gallery has over 25 artisans whose works include metal-smithing, ceramics, jewellery, embroidery and appliqué, hand knitted hats, baskets, felting, glass, bag and book binding. It also carries yummy Krave Chocolates, Purely Salt Spring soap, skin and hair products and Sacred Mountain Lavender products. All are local ( from B.C.), high quality and handmade products.

Here’s just a small sampling of the deeply original and tantalisingly tactile work from the Artisans gallery.

Jane MacKenzie Designs has a wide selection of colourful and luxurious silk scarves and shawls which she designs, dyes and weaves. Prices ranging from $135 - $415.

Debra Selkirk from Hornby Island, collects stones from the local beaches, semi-polishes them and worksthem into simple yet elegant pieces of jewellery. Price ranges from about $65- $300.

Kirsten Chursinoff from Vancouver creates wonderfully intricate embroidery and applique art. Trees, flowers and scenes from the natural world are charming, engaging & very accessible. $60 - $800.

Leather Mask Making Class

Muse Mask maker Andrea Russell is back from travel and circus adventures, but living on another island!
Returning to Salt Spring to teach a class May 22nd, Sunday, from 11am-2pm, The cost is $80, all materials included.

In one fun social class you learn how to create a leather mask from start to finish! You can design your own, or use one of the templates from designs I have used in the past. The price is includes all materials, you just need to bring your enthusiasum! You can make a mask, or if you wish, a head-dress, elf ears, wrist gauntlet, or? Possibilities are endless! The technique is called water hardening.

We will not be painting or dying the masks in this class, though directions on how to do so will be provided.
There is only room for six students, and this is the only class offered on SSI this Spring, so please book your spot NOW!

Kits for those who like to DIY on their own time, are also available. It contains all the instruction you need, and enough leather to make two small bandit style masks, for $40.
